Isaiah 7 says, “Unless your faith is firm, I can not make you stand.”
Then the Lord sent a message to King Ahaz: “Ask the Lord your God for a sign of confirmation, Ahaz. Make it as difficult as you want- as high as heaven or as deep as the place of the dead.”
But the king refused. “No” he said, “I will not test the Lord like that.”
Then Isaiah said, “Listen well, you royal family of David! Isn’t it enough to exhaust human patience. Must you exhaust the patience of my God as well?”
I read this account in my time with God this morning and it struck me. Many Christians believe that it is wrong to ask for signs from God. But in this story, the Lord himself told the king to ask him for confirmation and the king refused.
When you have a direct invitation from God to play, why would you decline? I believe the king was so caught up in “doing the right thing” that he didn’t open his heart to see that God was inviting him to be a co-creator, a co-heir, co-laborer with Him.
I am not a theologian, but I do believe God delights in playing with us and meeting us where we are. I have sought out this kind of relationship with Him after seeing other people with a close relationship and it has made my life colorful, vibrant and mystical. The more time I spend with Him, the more wonder he reveals to me, and the more time with Him I want.
Experiencing this tangible, exciting, romantic part of God isn’t going to happen if we won’t seek Him first. He has already extended the invitation just by breathing us into life, and then it becomes our turn to accept.
It all starts with a little faith. If you don’t know how to have faith, think about all your fears. The fear of what God might think of you, how your life won’t measure up to His standards, how your life might be constrained by a bunch of rules, how shame might come out and control you more than it already does are the devil’s way of keeping you exactly where you are. The devil uses fear to control you and God uses faith to set you free.
After all, what is is really going to hurt to dip your toes in to test the water a little bit. You’ve probably experimented with other things that didn’t serve you well. Why not give God a try?
Maybe you have been hurt by the church or Christians or people who have godly social media personas. Those are all just people, people that are imperfect. Letting people/God’s creations determine your relationship with Your Creator is giving them a lot of power they were ever meant to have.
“They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator– who is forever praised. Amen.” Romans 1:25
You deserve to experience freedom, beauty and divine romance.
If you don’t know where to begin, start with the Bible. I love the books of Psalms, Romans, Ephesians and Philippians. Journaling has been my heart connection to God for the last 4 years. I journal my questions, thoughts, fears, doubts and gratitudes and the Lord reveals things to me in my writings that are powerful. Write a letter to God and ask him to show up in specific ways today.
