How To Hear From God and Know His Voice

In Devotions, Inspiration by Kristen Dalton Wolfe3 Comments

We all have been created to hear and connect with God in our own unique way. It is so beautiful for Christians to know that the Lord still speaks to us today. We just have to listen and learn how to tap into the divine channel.

I remember the first time I heard someone talking about how God told them certain things. I was in the car with my boyfriend, now husband, Kris and we were on a road trip with his friend Heidi. I remember listening to her in amazement and also a little frustration, because I didn’t know what she meant that God “told” her x,y, and z. It made me feel small and like God talked to her, but not to me. I remember crying to The Lord about it. I wanted to hear from him too, I wanted that intimacy.

And like the bible says, when you seek him, you will find him.

I sought some sound counsel from some Godly women I admired and I also wanted it so much that I went to the School of Ministry.

Now I find myself having experiences and encounters all the time that I talk about like it’s a regular part of my day.

I want to help you hear from God because there is nothing more powerful. No other voice you could hear or conversation you could have could be as clarifying, life-giving and true.

Now instead of asking people their advice and opinion, I go to God first. He usually answers me and tells me what I need to know. Joyce Meyer says, “Don’t go to the phone, go to the Throne!”

Here is how:

Be still and know that He is God:
Ask The Lord to quiet all the voices in your head that are not from Him. Meditate on all the awesome things he has done for you.

Some of my favorite places to encounter God are in quiet places in nature like a hike or the beach or morning walks. When I can’t do that, I love laying on the floor listening to wordless soaking music.

Mind of Christ: You must realize that as a daugher of the King, you have the mind of Christ so when you have quieted the other voices, you should believe that everything that comes in you mind when you seek Him are from heaven.

Discernment: The more time you spend in scripture, the more it transforms your mind and becomes apart of your soul. The best way to determine if something is from God is to run it by what scripture says is the character of God.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit…it exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” Hebrews 4:12

Visions: Ask your questions and wait for pictures or even a convicting feeling. You can test if it is God by renewing of your mind.

Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’swill is- his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

The Word: My favorite way is to get confirmation through scripture. I ask Holy Spirit to reveal to me what God wants to tell me and he gives me a verse that pops up in my head.

Journaling: Journaling is everything. I am obsessed with it. I journal my prayers, desires, praises, concerns, anxieties and questions. As I’m writing, revelations and breakthroughs sometimes flow through my hand.

I remember Kris and I were at this relationship bootcamp before we were married and I asked for confirmation that Kris was supposed to be my husband. As I finished writing this and looked up, the instructor said, “If an engaged couple can get through this, they are meant to be.”

Signs: God loves to play with His children. He says to come and present our requests boldly at the throne. I love asking for specific signs sometimes. One time, God gave me lighting and thunder in the broad daylight when I asked specifically for an answer.

Ask for encounters or answers in dreams. The way I came up with SheisMore and the title for my book Rise Up, Princess was asking God to give me the names. Both times, I was in a dozing state and asked God for the idea and He spoke them to me clearly.

God will answer you in the little things of the day like, “should I buy this?” Should I say yes to this job?” and the big things of life like, “is he my husband?”

Praying and fasting: I believe you can have the most major breakthoughs through praying and fasting. I have prayed and fasted for Easter the last 3 years. Each experience was different, but this past year was my favorite.

I spent so much time in the Word, asking God questions and going on hikes where I talked to him. I had so many crazy downloads of understanding on biblical concepts, there is no way I could have made it up on my own.

I had a list of about 3 things I was praying for breakthrough on Easter. I was afraid I had left some things off the list. But Kris reminded me on our walk that when you seek first the Kingdom, all things will be added unto you.

It has been 45 days since Easter and God is still revealing new gifts and granted desires than I even remembered to pray for. That’s how good and abundant the Lord is.

I pray you will be able to experience God in new and deeper ways. God longs to meet you where you are when He knows your heart is pure and earnest.

The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” James 5:16
