Reveal Darkness with Light: “You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.” Psalm 18:28

There are a ton of books on the power of speaking positivity over your life, one of my favorites is called, I Declare: 31 Promises to Speak Over Your Life by Joel Osteen. Have any of you read these kind of books before or heard teachings on the decreeing a thing? I know a lot of my friends have. We all know the promises and can quote the wonderful truths God says about us in scripture and can easily talk about the importance of our thoughts and words impact our feelings & actions. And for some reason, it doesn’t seem to have be really and truly believed.

It can be really easy to know something with our mind, to hear the same encouraging scriptures over and over and over again. So why isn’t it taking root? Why do we still feel depressed or trapped?

This is something I have struggled with a lot. There are days I feel so frustrated because I don’t feel that innate peace and constant joy the bible says we have inherited regardless of our circumstances. Christians are supposed to be the happiest, most joyful and peaceful people out of everyone else. We are supposed to stand out because of it and be the light of the world. Then why is it that many of us don’t feel that way? How do we become the salt of the earth? God says that when we accept Jesus as our savior, that we have have a new nature in Christ. That the old has gone and the new has come. So why do we still feel the same way?

Have you ever experienced that? Where you know something with your mind, but it doesn’t seem to be apart of you? In your soul and heart?

After a couple years of agony over this very question, I came to a revelation one day while journalling. Because even though the Holy Spirit came to live inside of us when we received Jesus. The seed of that Holy Spirit needs to be nurtured. We become the hosts of His Presence and just like a seed needs good, nutrient packed soil to grow & bloom into good fruit, the power of our new nature becomes more present when we cultivate a place that invites him to bloom even more every day. We still have old habits, addictions and mindsets that need to be broken.

I believe that in order to be made new, there is another step that needs to take place and I call it the “She Reveals” component. She Reveals is a process that unveils the false beliefs we hold and the patterns we have formed in response to ungodly things that happened to us in our life. We do that by being transparent and vulnerable in revealing our stories, our pain, our insecurities and our mistakes. We can not cover all that brokenness up with positive thoughts and affirmations and expect it to all go away.

It’s like hiding a beautiful painting in the attic. It sits there for years in the dark, collecting dust and mothballs. The colors begin to fade, it’s even fraying in some places and spider webs have made there way around the edges. But when someone turns the light on, discovers the painting and removes the layers that have culminated in the dark, the true beauty is revealed. The true creation that was intended by the painter is unveiled and the life of it brings light into the home in which it now is proudly displayed.
