My Dearest Kitty,
If I were someone else, I’d begin this letter with cheesy paragraphs filled with sweet greetings and sentimental nothingness. But rather, I am not other people. So I write now as I always have, with direct honesty and heart exposed.
People are not as scary as we think they are. It’s funny how we allow pretty faces, nerd geniuses, and hulk bodies to intimate us. We like to class them as snobs or cocky to ease our own insecurity or green envy. While every person has unique talent and ability, I feel sometimes we ignorantly hold specific gifts over others. And when the person in front of us possesses the gift or talent we want, we often allow jealousy to brew in our hearts. Whether we are conscious of this or not, we develop aresistance toward them, a resistance that is grounded in fear and covered by insecurity.
Inadequate is a word that stems off of insecurity. It’s that feeling when beautiful blonde walks into the room with the tanned Ken and you feel that churning nausea in your gut. You subconsciously connect her beauty to her prize (the boyfriend) and her prize to the outcome (the status). In half a second, your brain concludes you don’t measure up because you don’t have these things and thus you are inadequate. You connect therejection to that person and out of this, you fear them.
Do you feel tired, little girl?
Lies make things much more complicated than they really are or need to be. Silent lies are the worst. They spin and weave until they are a mass of confusion inside of our minds. When we choose a pre-conceived idea we tend to look for all evidence to support it. Every action of the person becomes support for our theory of who we decided they are. Where there is a mind full of lies, there is no room for truth.
“In his pride the wicked does not seek him, in all his thoughts there is no room for God.” Psalm 10:4 NIV (emphasis mine).
Stop and ask yourself what you are giving room to in your life – truth or lies. When you say yes to one thing, you are usually saying no to another.
Pull out the Word and read up. Relax that set jaw a little. I’ll help you get started.
“How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!” Psalm 139:17 NIV
“Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30 NIV
“Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” Luke 12:27 NIV
Sit down, chill out, and release those preconceived ideas you have of those hot people in your life. You are precious to Father God; His thoughts toward you are more numerous then you could even begin to imagine. Physical beauty is a cheap thing to pursue; a pure and righteous heart for Jesus Christ is lasting beauty that surpasses the skin deep beauty we try to paint on. God looks out for you; He dresses the lilies. Consider their stress-free little faces. They know the Creator will care for their needs.
I imagine you’re looking better, sweetie. I hope the creases on your face are beginning to smooth. That’s always a good sign.
Think about that person in your life that you silently fear; the one that intimidates you when they walk into the room. Funny isn’t it, how she always smells like citrus midst and walks so smoothly it’s as if she glides across the floor. It almost aggravating how her words slide out like maple syrup and stick to her listener’s ears. I can almost see that look that crosses your face. Its okay, I understand your thought.
Why must she be so…
She’s only as perfect as you make her to be in your mind. Aye, yes, read that again. She’s only as perfect as you make her to be in your mind.
What would it do to you if you realized that the beautiful blonde has to shave her armpits just like you do? Or that tanned Ken wakes up with dragon breath and passes gas after a burrito? They still pinch their fingers in car doors and leave the toilet seat up and run stop signs and throw the alarm clock and spit tooth paste out of their mouth.
Notice something happened just now. They became strangely … human. Strangely … so like you. And this is where feardissipates – because beyond the varied cover, inside they contain a heart and story much like yours.
If this letter had a hash tag, it would be … #realitycheck.
